The Battle of Philippi: A Key Event in the American Civil War

The Battle of Philippi was fought on June 3, 1861, in the western Virginia region, just a few weeks after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina marked the beginning of the American Civil War. The Confederate army, under the command of General Robert S. Garnett, had successfully occupied Philippi and the surrounding area, but their hold on the region was soon challenged by the Union army, led by General George B. McClellan. The Confederate army consisted of about 1,500 soldiers, while the Union army had over 4,000 soldiers at their disposal. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Confederate soldiers held off several Union attacks for several hours.
